Building Friendships and Support Networks
We all need to have a variety of people involved in our lives, not just our parents.
A network of friends and family is especially important to people with learning disabilities who may outlive
their parents or other close family. Some people with learning disabilities have told us that they would
like to know that other people will be around for them when their parents pass away, to make sure they have
a good life and are safe and well.
We'll look at:
- Building friendships with other people with learning disabilities.
- Involving siblings.
- Building a network of friends or circle of support.
Who's it for?
- Anyone who wants to involve siblings or friends in the planning process. It may be the first time
that an individual’s siblings or friends have done future planning and crucially it’s designed to
ensure that everyone’s on the same ‘page’. Once established this group then becomes the core of the
circle support who’ll meet regularly/annually to discuss issues, opportunities and decisions.
Key Deliverables
- Timely collation and completion of the appropriate forms to secure Lasting Power of Attorney or Court Appointed Deputyship.
- An explanation of how the HOLD model works and an overview of Discretionary Trusts.
- Establishment of the ongoing circle of support process.
